The Prince of Spain (in Spanish: Spanish: Príncipe de España) was a special title created in Spain. It was made by law on 22 July 1969. This title was given to Prince Juan Carlos de Borbón. He was chosen to be the next leader after Generalísimo Francisco Franco.

Juan Carlos held this title until 22 November 1975. On that date, he became the King of Spain. This happened after Franco passed away. Juan Carlos was the only person ever to hold the title of Prince of Spain. Today, the person who is expected to become King or Queen of Spain is called the Prince of Asturias or Princess of Asturias.

What Was the Prince of Spain Title?

The title of Prince of Spain was created for a specific reason. It was meant to prepare Juan Carlos to take over leadership. He was being trained to become the future head of the Spanish state. This title showed his important role as the chosen successor.

Special Honors for the Prince

When Juan Carlos was the Prince of Spain, he had special honors. He was addressed as His Royal Highness. This is a very respectful way to refer to members of a royal family. He also held a high military rank. He was the Captain General of the Army. This meant he was the top military commander.

Symbols of the Prince

The Prince of Spain also had his own special symbols. These included a unique coat of arms. He also had a personal royal standard. These designs were officially set by law on 22 April 1971. They were made just for Juan Carlos to use as Prince of Spain.

Juan Carlos Becomes King

Juan Carlos held the title of Prince of Spain for about six years. When Francisco Franco died in 1975, Juan Carlos became the new leader. He was crowned King of Spain. At that point, the title of Prince of Spain was no longer needed. It was officially ended on 22 November 1975.
