Allura in Voltron: Defender of the Universe
In the classic 1984 TV show, Princess Allura is the ruler of Planet Altea. She is the last surviving member of her royal family after her father, King Alfor, passed away. Allura becomes the pilot of the Blue Lion, one of the five robot lions that combine to form Voltron. She takes over this role after Sven can no longer pilot it. Allura also has special, super-smart mice that can understand human speech.
Allura in Voltron: Legendary Defender
In the newer series, Voltron: Legendary Defender, Allura is also the princess of Altea. She is the daughter of King Alfor and the last female member of the Altean people. Allura and her loyal helper, Coran, slept in the Castle of Lions for 10,000 years. She commanded the Castle of Lions and later became the pilot of the Blue Lion. In the final episode of the series, Allura made a huge sacrifice to save the entire galaxy.
How Allura Joined the Team
In Voltron: Legendary Defender, Allura wasn't originally one of the Voltron pilots. However, after Shiro, the Black Paladin, disappeared, Keith took his place. Lance then became the Red Paladin. To complete the Voltron team, Allura was chosen to pilot the Blue Lion. This made the team whole again, ready to fight evil.
Allura's Character Design
Allura's look has changed a bit over the years. In the classic Voltron show, she was shown with fair skin and blonde hair. Her home planet was sometimes called Altea and sometimes Arus, depending on where the show was aired.
In Legendary Defender, Allura is clearly Altean. Her design was updated to give her dark skin and white hair. This change likely helped her stand out from her human friends. She also spoke with a British accent, which was different from the other main characters.
Allura in the Comics
In the 2011 Devil's Due comic books, Princess Allura is shown as a 19-year-old teenager. This comic version of Allura is much tougher and more determined than her cartoon self. Her home planet, Arus, was attacked by the evil forces of Zarkon, and her parents were killed. Coran, a retired combat instructor, raised her, and she had to grow up very quickly.
Allura decided to give up her "princess" title. She said she would only be called "Allura" until her people were free from Zarkon. She had visions in her sleep where her father, King Alfor, promised that five young men would come to Arus to find the legendary robot Voltron.
When Keith, Lance, Hunk, Pidge, and Sven arrived on Arus and talked about Voltron, Allura knew they were the ones from her visions. She helped them find the five hidden lions. When Voltron couldn't combine properly because of a problem with Sven, Allura bravely stepped in. She piloted the Blue Lion, and because of her royal Arusian blood, Voltron finally formed successfully. She then became a full member of the Voltron Force. During the comic series, she and Keith started to develop special feelings for each other.
