Princess Hildegard of Bavaria was born on June 10, 1825. Her full name was Hildegard Luise Charlotte Theresia Friederike. She was the seventh child of Ludwig I, King of Bavaria, who was the King of Bavaria, and Therese of Saxe-Hildburghausen. Hildegard was an important member of the House of Wittelsbach, a royal family from Bavaria, Germany.

Her Marriage and Family

On May 1, 1844, Princess Hildegard married Archduke Albert of Austria in Munich. Archduke Albert was a very important royal from Austria. After her marriage, Hildegard became known as Archduchess Hildegard.

Archduchess Hildegard and Archduke Albert had three children:

  • Archduchess Maria Theresa of Austria: Born on July 15, 1845. She later married Duke Philipp of Württemberg.
  • Archduke Karl of Austria: Born on January 3, 1847. Sadly, he died very young on July 19, 1848, from a serious illness called smallpox.
  • Archduchess Mathilda of Austria: Born on January 25, 1849. She died at the age of 18 on June 6, 1867, due to an accident.

Her Final Years

In March 1864, Archduchess Hildegard traveled to Munich for the funeral of her brother, Maximilian II of Bavaria, who was the King of Bavaria. While she was there, she became very sick. She caught a lung inflammation and pleurisy, which is an infection of the lining around the lungs. Archduchess Hildegard passed away on April 2, 1864, in Munich. She was buried in the Imperial Crypt in Vienna, Austria.
