Princessville is a small, unincorporated community located in Lawrence Township, within Mercer County, in the state of New Jersey. An "unincorporated community" means it's a recognized place but doesn't have its own separate local government like a town or city. It's part of the larger township.

Discovering Princessville

Princessville might be small, but it has a rich history! It was once home to a famous place called the Princessville Inn. This inn was built a long time ago, during the Colonial era when America was still a group of colonies.

A Look Back in Time

The Princessville Inn was so important that it was even listed on the National Register of Historic Places. This list recognizes special places that are important to American history. Sadly, the inn burned down in 1982.

Even though the inn is gone, you can still visit the Princessville Cemetery. This cemetery is located on Princeton Pike. It's a very old place, with graves dating all the way back to 1843!

The Cemetery's Story

The land for the cemetery was actually donated by the Princessville Inn. It was given to a church called the Methodist Episcopal congregation. This church used the land for burials.

Later, in 1890, the Methodist Episcopal church moved to a new location. After they left, local African-American families built their own church on the same spot. Unfortunately, this church was destroyed by a powerful hurricane in 1950.

Important Places Today

Just down Meadow Road, past the cemetery, you'll find another historic building called the Baker-Brearley House. This house is also listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Today, it's home to the Lawrence Historical Society. This society helps to preserve and share the history of the area.

Where is Princessville?

The area directly south of Princessville is now a modern corporate office park. This park is conveniently located near the interchange between Princeton Pike and Interstate 295. If you head north from Princessville, you'll find that the area becomes mostly rural, meaning it has more farms and open land.
