How Scientists Study Frogs
For a while, scientists thought another frog, Pristimantis brevicrus, was the same as Pristimantis altamazonicus. But in 2017, after a new study, they realized they were different. So, Pristimantis brevicrus was recognized as its own species again.
New Discoveries
Also, some frogs found in Brazil and Bolivia were thought to be Pristimantis altamazonicus. However, scientists found out these frogs are actually new types of frogs. They haven't been given official names yet!
What Does This Frog Look Like?
The Pristimantis altamazonicus frog has some interesting features.
Size of the Frog
Adult male frogs are about 17 to 20 millimeters long. That's less than an inch! Female frogs are a bit bigger. They measure about 28 to 30 millimeters long. This measurement is from their snout (nose) to their vent (bottom).
Skin and Body Features
This frog has smooth skin on its back. But male frogs might have tiny bumps, called tubercles, scattered on their skin. Their snout is not too long and has a pointed shape.
Hands and Feet
These frogs do not have webbed fingers or toes. This means their digits are not connected by skin. However, they do have small skin edges, called lateral fringes, on their fingers and toes.
Colors and Patterns
The frog's back and sides are usually brown. They often have reddish and black spots. You might also see a clear, W-shaped mark on their shoulders. Some frogs can even have cream-colored stripes or dark blotches on their bodies.
