About the Rio Mamore Robber Frog

This interesting frog was first described by a scientist named Franz Steindachner in 1864. It's known by its common name, the Rio Mamore robber frog, because it was first found near the Mamoré River. The place where a new species is first found and described is called its type locality.

Where It Lives

The Rio Mamore robber frog can be found in several countries in the Amazon region. These include eastern Peru, northeastern Bolivia, southeastern Ecuador, southeastern Colombia, and Brazil.

Its favorite places to live are tropical forests. These are warm, wet forests, both in the mountains (montane) and in low-lying areas (lowland). You might also find this frog in forests that are regrowing after being cut down, or along the edges of forests. It's quite common in many parts of its home range.

How Many Are There?
