Pritchard's Outlook Historic District is a special neighborhood in Allegan, Michigan. It's mostly filled with old houses. You can find it near Park Drive, Walnut Street, Crescent Street, and Davis Street. This area is so important that it was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1987. It's like a living museum of old buildings!
A Look Back in Time: History of Pritchard's Outlook
The very first houses in Allegan were built way back in 1836. They were made for the Allegan Company. As the town grew, some of these early houses were actually moved! Four of them were brought to what is now the Pritchard's Outlook Historic District. You can still see these houses today at 220 Pine, 500 Cedar, 334 Cutler, and 416 Cutler.
Around 1838 and 1839, more houses were built in the district. As more people moved to Allegan, many new homes appeared in the 1860s and 1870s. These homes show off many different building styles. Many important early settlers of Allegan lived here. Some famous residents included Alby Rossman, who owned a foundry, and General Benjamin Pritchard. The town grew slowly in the 1880s, so not many houses are from that time. But growth picked up again in the late 1890s and early 1900s.
What You'll See: Exploring the District
Pritchard's Outlook Historic District is a big neighborhood with many homes. It's located close to the main part of Allegan. The district has 223 buildings in total. Most of these are homes (204 of them!). You'll also find eleven carriage houses, six churches, three office buildings, a fire station, and a school. A large number of these buildings (206) help make the neighborhood special and historic.
The streets here are narrow and lined with big trees. Most of the houses are made of wood. They come in many different sizes and styles. Most of the homes were built between 1850 and 1900. You'll see popular styles like Italianate, Queen Anne, and Colonial Revival. But you can also spot Greek Revival, Gothic Revival, and Craftsman buildings.
This district is home to some of the oldest houses in Allegan. Some were even moved from other parts of the city. It also has the oldest houses that are still on their original foundations. Four of the churches in the district are especially important:
- Seventh-Day Adventist Church (229 Cutler): This is the oldest church in Allegan. It was built in 1863. It has a cool eight-sided bell tower.
- First Presbyterian Church (200 Cutler): This church was built in 1875. It's made of brick and has a very tall spire.
- First Congregational Church (323 Cutler): Built in 1882, this church has two towers at the front.
- Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church (439 Trowbridge): This unique church was built later, in 1935.
