Priti Paintal was born in New Delhi, India, in 1960. Her father, Autar Singh Paintal, was a well-known Indian scientist. From a young age, Priti loved music. She learned both Indian and Western styles. As a child, she studied the sitar (a stringed instrument) and the tabla (drums). She also learned piano and how to compose music in India.

Later, Priti earned an advanced degree in music history and cultures. She then moved to England. There, she continued her music studies at York University and the Royal Northern College of Music in Manchester. She studied composition with a famous composer named Anthony Gilbert.

Creating New Sounds

In 1988, Priti Paintal started her own music group called ShivaNova. Her goal was to mix different music styles from around the world. She wanted to create a new, global sound.

ShivaNova often works with many kinds of artists. These include storytellers, jugglers, dancers, and even orchestras. The group also holds workshops in schools and local communities. They help young people learn about music and creativity.

Priti's music combines traditional Indian sounds with modern styles. It often features classical and jazz musicians. This creates a unique blend of old and new.

Her Famous Works

Priti Paintal has written many important musical pieces. One of her early works was a short opera called "Survival Song." It was even considered for the Olivier Awards, a major theater award.

This led to her writing a full-length opera called "Biko." This opera was performed in London and Birmingham. It was a very special project for the Royal Opera House. It was their first time asking an Asian woman composer to create an opera.
