Priyan (born 1964 – died 2017) was a talented Indian cinematographer. A cinematographer is the person who is in charge of the cameras and lighting on a movie set. They make sure the film looks amazing! Priyan worked mostly on Tamil language films.
He started by helping famous director Balu Mahendra. Later, he became a top cinematographer in the Tamil film world. He was especially known for his work with director Hari. Priyan passed away in 2017.

Priyan's Journey in Film
Priyan grew up in Virudhunagar, Tamil Nadu. When he was studying, he spent a summer with his uncle Ganesan in Chennai. His uncle saw that Priyan loved movies.
So, his uncle introduced him to K. Balaji. Balaji was an actor and producer in the Tamil film industry. Priyan then started working with Balaji's camera team. He worked for a company called Sujatha International for five years. Here, he learned a lot as an assistant cinematographer.
Working with Top Directors
Through his work, Priyan met the famous cinematographer and director Balu Mahendra. Priyan helped him on many films. These included Moondram Pirai (1982), Olangal (1982), Sadma (1983), and Yathra (1984).
He also worked on the camera teams for films by Mani Ratnam. These were Pagal Nilavu (1985) and Nayakan (1987). After this, Priyan worked with Rajiv Menon and Suresh Menon. He helped them with TV shows and commercials.
Becoming an Independent Cinematographer
Priyan became an independent cinematographer in 1995. His first film on his own was Thotta Chinungi by K. S. Adhiyaman. After that, he often worked with director Cheran. They made films like Porkkaalam (1997), Desiya Geetham (1998), and Vetri Kodi Kattu (1999).
Around the year 2000, Priyan got to work on bigger movies. These included Thenali (2000) with Kamal Haasan, Star (2001), and Majunu (2001).
Collaborations with Hari
Priyan then started working very often with director Hari. They made 13 movies together! One film, Venghai (2011), was made without Priyan. This was because he was busy working on Velayudham (2011) at the time.
