Georget Bernier (born September 21, 1929 – died January 10, 2005) was a French humorist. He was better known as Professeur Choron. He was also the founder of Hara Kiri magazine. A humorist is someone who uses humor to entertain people.
Early Life
Georges Bernier was born in La Neuville-aux-Bois, France. He lost his father when he was 11 years old. He did not have much formal schooling.
He worked many different jobs. Later, he served in the Indochina Wars for over two years. After returning, he started working in the press. He became a sales manager for a funny newspaper called Zéro.
Creating Magazines
While working at Zéro, he met François Cavanna and Fred. Together, they started Hara Kiri magazine in 1960. This magazine was known for its funny and sometimes shocking humor.
They later created a publishing company called Éditions du Square. Professeur Choron helped write and edit for Hara Kiri. He also appeared on a TV show called Les Raisins verts.
In 1969, the Hara Kiri team launched Hara-Kiri Hebdo. This magazine was later renamed L’Hebdo Hara-Kiri. Éditions du Square also published other magazines. These included Charlie Mensuel, an early environmental journal called La Gueule ouverte, and BD, l'hebdo de la BD.
In 1970, they started Charlie Hebdo. This was a weekly newspaper about politics. Professeur Choron wrote for it often. The paper stopped in 1981 but was relaunched in 1993. It is still published today.
Later Career
In 1988, Professeur Choron turned some of his funny DIY tips into a TV show. He also appeared in a show called Merci Bernard.
His last publications included La Mouise and Grodada. Grodada was a magazine for children. He also helped with other magazines like ZOO and Yeti. He even helped relaunch Zero magazine in 1986.
Personal Life
Professeur Choron was the father of comedian Michèle Bernier. He passed away on January 10, 2005, in Paris. He was buried next to his wife, Odile Vaudelle.
In 2008, a documentary film was made about him. It was called Choron Dernière.
