Kids Encyclopedia Facts

Emeritus is a special title given to people who used to have important jobs, like a professor at a university or a bishop in a church. When someone is called "emeritus," it means they still have their title, but they are no longer actively doing the work of that job. This usually happens when they retire, often because of old age.

You will usually see the word emeritus placed after the person's official title, like Professor emeritus. This helps everyone know that they are still respected for their past role, even though they are not working in it anymore.

History of the Emeritus Title

From Ancient Rome to Today

The word "emeritus" comes from the Roman Empire. Back then, it was used for soldiers. If a soldier was called "emeritus," it meant they had finished their time serving in the army and no longer had to fight.

Today, the idea is similar. For example, a Bishop emeritus no longer has to lead church services every week. However, they might still be able to perform special duties, such as confirmations or helping to ordain new priests. This shows they still hold their important position, even in retirement.
