Profile Rock: A Natural Landmark
What Was Profile Rock?
Profile Rock was a natural rock shape that looked like a human face. It was a special landmark in Massachusetts. Many people visited it over the years. The rock was a tall, impressive part of the landscape.
A Look at Its History
Profile Rock has a long and interesting history. It was important to local people for many reasons.
The Wampanoag Connection
The Wampanoag are Native Americans who lived in this area. They believed the rock looked like their great leader, Chief Massasoit. Chief Massasoit was a good friend to the early Pilgrim settlers. The Wampanoags lived in what is now Rhode Island and Massachusetts. Their land stretched from Narragansett Bay to the Atlantic Ocean.
How Joshua's Mountain Got Its Name
The mountain where Profile Rock stood was named Joshua's Mountain. It was named after Joshua Tisdale. He was the first person to settle near this special site. For many years, the land was privately owned. Later, it was sold to the Commonwealth of Massachusetts. The state wanted to make it a park for everyone to enjoy.
The Day the Rock Changed
On June 19, 2019, something big happened. Around 9:22 in the morning, police and fire departments got a call. They went to the "Profile Rock" Park in the Freetown State Forest. They found that a large piece of the rock had broken off. Park officials quickly closed the area. They wanted to keep everyone safe. Visitors were asked to stay away from the damaged rock.
Protecting Natural Wonders
For several years, the site faced challenges. Since at least 2016, people often drew graffiti on the rock. The Bristol County Sheriff's Office worked hard to clean it up. As of July 31, 2023, the park was open again. However, some areas still showed signs of graffiti. It reminds us how important it is to protect our natural landmarks.
