Proncy Castle is an old castle that is now in ruins. It is located near the town of Dornoch in the Highland area of Scotland.
History of Proncy Castle
Proncy Castle has a long and interesting past. It started as a simple wooden fort and grew into a stone castle.
Early Days
In 1211, a man named Hugh de Moravia gave the land of Proncy to Gilbert de Moravia. Gilbert was a bishop, an important church leader.
Around that time, in the early 1200s, a "motte and bailey" castle was built here. Imagine a big mound of earth (the motte) with a wooden tower on top. Below it was a fenced-in area (the bailey) where people lived and worked. Later, a strong stone tower was built on top of the motte.
Changing Owners
Over the years, Proncy Castle had many different owners. At one point, it was owned by Elizabeth Sutherland, 10th Countess of Sutherland, a powerful noblewoman, and her husband, Adam Gordon.
In 1524, the castle was given to William Sutherland of Duffus. After that, the Gordon family of Proncy took ownership of the castle.
Today, Proncy Castle is a ruin, meaning only parts of it remain. But it still stands as a reminder of Scotland's long history.
