Prospect New Orleans facts for kids
Prospect New Orleans is a large art event that takes place in New Orleans. It brings together modern art from many different artists in various locations across the city.
What is Prospect New Orleans?
The first event, called "Prospect.1 New Orleans," happened from November 2008 to January 2009. It was like other big international art shows called biennials, which usually happen every two years. Famous biennials include the Venice Biennale and the São Paulo Biennial.
This first event showed the new and exciting art of 81 top artists from all over the world. Their art was displayed in more than 24 different places across New Orleans. The event also had many fun cultural and educational activities for people living in the city.
How Prospect New Orleans Started
A person named Dan Cameron, who is an expert in choosing and organizing art shows (called a curator), thought of Prospect New Orleans. He visited New Orleans in early 2006, just a few months after Hurricane Katrina. The hurricane had caused a lot of damage to the city.
During a meeting with artists in New Orleans, Dan Cameron saw that everyone was upset about how slowly the city was being rebuilt. He wanted to help the city and its artists. So, in January 2007, he started a new group called U.S. Biennial, Inc. This group is a nonprofit, which means it uses its money to help a cause instead of making a profit.
Dan Cameron got money to start the group, found people to volunteer and help run it, rented offices, and hired staff. All of this helped him make his idea for the art event come true.
Prospect.2 New Orleans
The organizers of Prospect New Orleans are planning another big event called "Prospect.2 New Orleans." This event is set to happen from October 2011 to January 2012.
Prospect.2 will show the work of both well-known and new artists from all over the world. About half of the chosen artists are from the United States, and 10 of them live right in New Orleans. Artists from more than 20 countries in Africa, Asia, Europe, and the Americas will also be part of this exciting show.
