Providence is a small place in Bureau County, Illinois, United States. It's called an unincorporated community, which means it's a settlement that doesn't have its own local government like a city or town. It's located to the west-southwest of a town called Tiskilwa.

About Providence, Illinois

Providence is a quiet community found in Bureau County, Illinois. Being an unincorporated community means it's a populated area that doesn't have its own separate local government. Instead, it's managed by the county. This is different from a city or town, which would have its own mayor and council.

How Providence Started

The story of Providence began in 1836. A group of 72 people, who were stockholders (meaning they owned shares in a company or project), came from a place called Providence, Rhode Island. They made plans to create a new settlement in Illinois.

This group bought a very large piece of land, about 17,000 acres. To give you an idea, one acre is roughly the size of a football field. So, 17,000 acres is a huge area!

In 1837, about 40 people moved to this new land. These individuals were the first residents of what would become Providence, Illinois. They worked together to build their new community.
