Tiskilwa is a small village located in Bureau County, Illinois, United States. It's sometimes called the "Gem of the Valley." In 2020, about 740 people lived here. Tiskilwa is part of the larger Ottawa area.

A company called Exelon Wind, which is part of Exelon Power, runs a big wind energy project in Tiskilwa. This project helps create clean energy.

The Story of Tiskilwa

Early Days of the Village

Before and after people from Europe settled in Illinois, the area where Tiskilwa is now was home to a Potawatomi village called Indiantown. In 1836, a man named Augustus Langworthy started a town called Windsor in this spot.

Then, in 1840, Windsor and Indiantown joined together and were renamed Tiskilwa. The village officially became a town in 1856. Tiskilwa grew into an important place for the economy and culture of the region. It had its own government, schools, churches, and shops. These places served both the people living in the village and farm families from the surrounding area. It was a small community with its main street being the center of activity.

Tiskilwa High School closed its doors in 1996. Now, high school students from Tiskilwa go to Princeton High School (Illinois). The Tiskilwa grade school building is now used for special education programs for several counties. It also hosts the Bureau Educational Support Team (BEST Program), which is an alternative school for students from kindergarten through 12th grade.

The very first school buildings in Tiskilwa were built in 1838. A newer building was put up in 1867. The modern high school building was built in 1978, but it closed when the school system changed in 1996. The first class to graduate from Tiskilwa was in 1878, with only two students.

Fun Festivals in Tiskilwa

Strawberry Festival Fun

Tiskilwa has a special Strawberry and Artisan Festival every year on the second Saturday in June. This festival celebrates the local strawberry season and shows off the work of artists from the area. You can enjoy fresh berries and strawberry shortcake, listen to live music, and find fun activities for kids. There are also food vendors in downtown Tiskilwa. This festival often happens at the same time as town-wide garage sales.

Pow Wow Days Celebration

Tiskilwa celebrates Pow Wow Days every year during the first weekend in August. This is a three-day event! It includes a community concert, big band dancing, a parade, and a Native American pow wow. There are also food stands run by the 4-H Club and cheerleaders, church lunches, historical tours, and displays of antique cars and tractors. Pow Wow Days started in 1976 as part of the national bicentennial celebration.
