The Provisional Government (1868–1871) was a temporary government in Spain. It was set up after Queen Isabella II of Spain was removed from power. This happened on September 30, 1868, during an event called the Glorious Revolution. The Provisional Government lasted until a new king, Amadeo I of Spain, officially took the throne on January 2, 1871.
This period was the first part of a six-year time in Spanish history. It is known as the Sexenio Democrático, which means "Democratic Six Years" (1868–1874).
Spain's New Start
After the revolution in September 1868, Spain needed a new direction. The people who led the revolution formed a group of three main political parties. These parties worked together to create the new government.
- The Unión Liberal (Liberal Union) was led by Francisco Serrano.
- The Progressive Party was led by Juan Prim.
- The Democratic Party was also part of this group.
These parties had to decide what kind of government Spain would have.
Choosing a Monarchy
The leaders of the new government, known as the Cortes (like a parliament), decided against having a republic. Instead, they chose to keep a constitutional monarchy. This meant Spain would still have a king or queen, but their power would be limited by a new constitution.
This time period can be split into two main parts:
- First, a new constitution was written and put into effect on June 1, 1869. This document set the rules for how Spain would be governed.
- Second, from June 1869 to January 1871, the government searched for a suitable new king. This king would need to promise to follow the new constitution.
During this search, Marshal Francisco Serrano, 1st Duke of la Torre acted as the Regent. A regent is someone who rules a country when the king or queen is too young, absent, or, in this case, when there is no king yet. Juan Prim, 1st Marquis of los Castillejos served as the Prime Minister. He was in charge of the daily running of the government.
