The Provisional Governing Junta was the very first group that officially ran Mexico after it became independent. This important group managed the country from September 28, 1821, until February 24, 1822. It stopped governing when the first Mexican Congress was officially set up.
How the Junta Was Formed
The Provisional Governing Junta was created because of two important rules in the Plan of Iguala. This plan was a key document that helped Mexico become an independent country.
The plan said:
- A special group, called a "Junta," would be chosen right away. This group would include important and respected people from all over the new Mexican Empire.
- The goal was to have many smart people work together to make good decisions for the country.
- This group would be known as the Provisional Governing Junta.
Running the Country
The Junta had its first meeting on the morning of September 28, 1821. Even the former Spanish leader, Viceroy O'Donoju, joined them.
Agustín de Iturbide, a key leader in Mexico's independence, presented the plan for what the Junta would do. He promised that he and the army would follow the Junta's decisions.
After this, the members of the Junta went to the National Cathedral. There, they all took an oath. They promised to support the Plan of Iguala and another agreement called the Treaty of Cordoba.
Later that same afternoon, Mexico officially declared its independence. A special group called a "regency" was also formed to act as the main executive power.
Leaders of the Junta
Here are the people who served as president of the Provisional Governing Junta:
