The Prunus tatsienensis (also known as the Kangding Cherry in Chinese) is a type of cherry plant. Scientists are still studying if it is its own unique species. It grows naturally in several provinces of China. These include Henan, Hubei, Shaanxi, Shanxi, Sichuan, and Yunnan.

About the Kangding Cherry Tree

This plant is usually found in mountains. It grows at high altitudes, from about 900 meters (around 3,000 feet) up to 2,600 meters (about 8,500 feet) above sea level. That's pretty high up!

What Does It Look Like?

The Kangding Cherry can be a small tree or a shrub. It usually grows to be about 2 to 5 meters tall. That's like the height of a small house or a tall basketball hoop.

Is It a Unique Species?

Scientists are still debating if Prunus tatsienensis is truly a separate species. Some think it might be the same as other cherry species. For example, it is very similar to Prunus polytricha and Prunus clarofolia.

One small difference noted was tiny disc-shaped glands on the edges of its bracts. Bracts are like small, leaf-like parts near a flower. However, this special trait was not found in the first descriptions of the plant. It was also not seen in the original plant samples used for study. This makes scientists wonder if it is really different enough to be its own species.
