Przecław of Pogorzela (born March 5, 1310 – died April 6, 1376) was a very important leader in the Roman Catholic Church. He was a Cardinal and served as the Bishop of Wrocław from 1342 to 1376. He was also the Duke of Nysa.
Early Life and Becoming a Bishop
Przecław of Pogorzela was born in 1310. He came from a noble family in a place called the Duchy of Brześc.
By April 1329, he had become a canon in Wrocław. A canon is a type of priest who works closely with a bishop.
In 1336, he traveled to Bologna in Italy to continue his studies. This was a common path for educated people at the time.
On May 5, 1341, Przecław was chosen to be the Bishop of Wrocław. However, another important church leader, the Archbishop of Gniezno named Janisław, did not agree with this choice.
Because of this disagreement, Przecław had to travel all the way to Avignon. This city in France was where the Pope lived at that time. He needed the Pope's personal approval.
The Pope confirmed his appointment on January 28, 1342. This meant Przecław could officially begin his role as Bishop.
A Builder and Strong Leader
Przecław of Pogorzela was known as a great builder. He helped finish the construction of the Wroclaw Cathedral, which is a very large and important church.
He also oversaw the building of the Church of St. Stanislaus and Dorothy. He built the chapel of St. Mary's Church and Joseph's Hospital in Nysa.
He also helped start several monasteries. These were places where monks or nuns lived and prayed. He founded monasteries for the Carmelite, Carthusian, Augustinian, and Benedictine orders.
Bishop Przecław also introduced the celebration of St. Jadwiga's feast day. She was a very respected saint in the region.
He met with powerful leaders of his time. These included Emperor Charles IV of Luxembourg and King Casimir III the Great of Poland.
In 1348, he bought a castle called Jánský vrch from Bolko II of Świdnica. He then turned this castle into a grand palace for the prince-bishops of Wrocław.
Later Years and Legacy
Przecław of Pogorzela passed away during the night of April 5-6, 1376. He died in a town called Otmuchów.
He was buried in a special marble tomb inside the chapel of St. Mary's Church, which is part of Wrocław Cathedral.
His time as Bishop of Wrocław is often called a "golden age" for the bishopric. This means it was a period of great success and growth for the church in that area.
