Pueblo Viejo means 'old village' in Spanish. It is a small village located in northwestern Argentina. You can find it in the Iruya Department of Salta Province.
This village is close to Iruya. A dirt road called Ruta Provincial 165-S connects Pueblo Viejo with Campo Carreras. Campo Carreras is part of the village Rodeo Colanzulí.
Pueblo Viejo is special because it is part of Finca Santiago. This is the first community-owned property in Argentina. In 2001, about 190 people lived here. This was a 12.5% increase from 1991, when 168 people lived there.
The people of Pueblo Viejo mainly earn a living from farming. They raise small animals and also work in tourism. There is also a small business that makes handicrafts.
In the center of the village, you will find a school named "Congreso de Tucumán." There is also a health station and a chapel. The villagers rebuilt the chapel in the 1990s.
Historical records suggest that Pueblo Viejo is the oldest village in the Iruya Department. People believe that the first settlers in the Iruya region made this place their home.
Getting to Pueblo Viejo
You can start your journey to Pueblo Viejo from Iruya. Part of the trip can be done by bus on Ruta Provincial 133. The bus will stop at Toroyoc, which is about 6 kilometers from Iruya.
From Toroyoc, you need to cross the river. On the other side, there is a steep path that is not easy to find. It takes about half an hour to walk up to the village from there. The start of this trail is at 22°50′24.5″S 65°13′33″W / 22.840139°S 65.22583°W.
Another way to reach Pueblo Viejo is from the nearby village of Campo Carreras. You can follow the unpaved road called Ruta Provincial 165-S. From November to April, parts of this road might be under water. During these months, you might need to walk or use special off-road vehicles.
