Pueblo del Arroyo is an ancient building site. It was built by the Ancestral Puebloans. This group of people lived in the southwestern United States a long time ago.
Pueblo del Arroyo is a type of large building called a "great house." You can find it in Chaco Culture National Historical Park. This park is in New Mexico, United States.
Building a Great House
Construction of Pueblo del Arroyo started around the year 1060 AD. The builders worked on it for about 30 years. It is one of the biggest great houses in Chaco Canyon.
This great house has about 300 rooms. It is the fourth largest great house in the canyon. Pueblo del Arroyo is special because of where it was built.
Most great houses in Chaco Canyon face south. They are usually located near the north wall of the canyon. But Pueblo del Arroyo was built right in the middle of the canyon. It faces east instead of south.
Discovering the Past
An American archaeologist named Neil Judd studied Pueblo del Arroyo. He dug up parts of the site from 1923 to 1926. An archaeologist is someone who studies human history by digging up old sites.
Judd uncovered about half of the building. He thought that people from a nearby great house, Pueblo Bonito, built Pueblo del Arroyo. He believed they moved there because Pueblo Bonito became too crowded.
Inside Pueblo del Arroyo, archaeologists found 14 kivas. A kiva is a special room used by the Ancestral Puebloans. These rooms were often used for ceremonies or community gatherings. However, a very large "great kiva" has not been found at this site.
