Puente of Alcántara

The Puente de Alcántara is an ancient Roman arch bridge. You can find it in Toledo, Spain, stretching over the River Tagus. The name "Alcántara" comes from an Arabic word, al-qanţarah, which means "the arch."

This famous bridge sits near the Castillo de San Servando. The Romans built it when they first started the city of Toledo. For many years in the Middle Ages, it was one of the only ways for travelers and pilgrims to enter the city.

History of the Alcántara Bridge

The Puente de Alcántara has a long and interesting history. It was first built by the Romans when Toledo was founded. Over time, the bridge has been damaged and rebuilt many times.

Early Roman Construction

The bridge was originally built during Roman times. It was a key part of the city's defenses and travel routes. Evidence shows it was there from the very beginning of Toledo, then called Toletum.

Changes Through the Centuries

In the 10th century, the bridge was badly damaged. When it was rebuilt, one of its original three arches was removed. This arch was replaced with a gate that had a horseshoe shape. This change made it even more important as a controlled entry point into the city.

During the rule of Alfonso X of Castile, the bridge suffered more damage. It was repaired again during his time. The tower on the western side of the bridge was built around this period. Later, the Catholic Monarchs added their family symbols to its walls. You might notice that the symbol of a pomegranate is missing. This is because the Reconquista (the Christian reconquest of Spain) was not yet finished.

In 1721, the eastern tower of the bridge was in very bad shape. It was replaced with a beautiful Baroque triumphal arch. This arch stands there today.

A National Treasure

Because of its long history and importance, the Puente de Alcántara was declared a national cultural monument in 1921. It is a protected landmark in Spain.

Important Note: Don't Get Confused!

It's easy to mix up this bridge with others. There are two other famous Roman bridges that also cross the River Tagus further downstream. These are the Alcántara Bridge in Alcántara and the Alconétar Bridge in the Extremadura region. Make sure you know which one you are talking about!
