What is the Puerta de los Doce Cantos?
The Puerta de los Doce Cantos has a long history, dating back to its Arab origins. It was built at the southeastern edge of a fortress known as Al-Hieén. Its main purpose was to allow foot soldiers to pass through, leading them towards the Plaza de Armas de Alcántara square.
How was the gate used?
For many centuries, this gate was actually sealed up, meaning it couldn't be used. However, in the 1920s, the city underwent some big changes and renovations. During this time, the Puerta de los Doce Cantos was restored. Even though some parts of its original Arab structure were removed during the restoration, it was still recognized as a special historical site. It was declared a "bien de interés cultural", which means it's a cultural heritage site worth protecting.
