España - Toledo - Puerta del Vado
Puerta del Vado

The Puerta del Vado is an old city gate in Toledo, Spain. It was built a long, long time ago, around the late 1000s or early 1100s. This gate is found in a part of Toledo called Antequeruela. This area was famous for making pottery.

What is the Puerta del Vado?

The Puerta del Vado is a special entrance that was once part of the city's walls. City gates were like big doors that let people in and out of a walled city. They also helped protect the city from invaders.

Why Was It Covered Up?

Over many years, the Puerta del Vado slowly got buried. This happened because of its location. People used to throw waste from nearby pottery workshops in this area. Dirt and other materials piled up, covering the gate.

Around the late 1400s and early 1500s, some changes were made. The ground level around the gate was raised by more than a meter. This meant the gate became even more buried.

Falling Out of Use

Even with these changes, the Puerta del Vado was used less and less after the 1600s. By the end of that century, it was completely abandoned. Only the very top part of the gate could still be seen above the ground.

How It Looks Now

The Puerta del Vado looks a lot like another old gate in Toledo, the Puerta de Bisagra Vieja. They have similar shapes and sizes. Today, you can only see the upper part of the Puerta del Vado from the street. It's a hidden piece of history!
