Puerto Gala, also known as Gala, is a small village and fishing community in southern Chile. It is located on Toto Island, where the Jacaf Channel meets the Moraleda Channel. This village is known for its strong connection to the sea and fishing.
How Puerto Gala Started
Puerto Gala began in the late 1980s. It grew because of a big increase in fishing for a type of fish called merluza, which is a kind of hake. Many people moved here to find work.
Some of the first people who settled in Puerto Gala were looking for a safe place to live. They had faced difficult times in other parts of Chile. They did not have the money to move to other countries, so they came to this remote area.
In its early years, Puerto Gala was a very new settlement. There were not many rules or laws in place. The authorities tried to make the settlers leave because they said the village was not officially recognized. However, the people stayed, and the village continued to grow.
Fishing and Challenges
For a while, fishing for merluza was very successful. However, as more people fished, there were fewer fish left. This is called overfishing.
Because of overfishing, the government eventually had to stop merluza fishing completely. This meant many people lost their jobs. Some settlers had to move back to their old homes in Chiloé to find new work.
Fishermen from Puerto Gala and a nearby village called Puerto Gaviota sometimes had disagreements with larger fishing companies. These companies used big boats and equipment, which made it harder for the smaller, local fishermen to catch fish.
