Gran Puerto port in Puerto Juárez
|
Puerto Juárez is a small district in the Benito Juárez area of Quintana Roo, a Mexican state. It is located on the north-east side of the Yucatán Peninsula, right on the beautiful Caribbean Sea. This district is only about 2 kilometers (1.25 miles) north of the center of Cancún.
Before Cancún became a big city, Puerto Juárez was the main place where people lived in this area. It was a separate town from the 1960s until 1990. Then, it became part of Cancún as one of its districts.
Ferry Services at Gran Puerto
Gran Puerto is the name of the ferry port found in Puerto Juárez. This port is super important because it's the main way to get to Isla Mujeres. Isla Mujeres is an island about 10 kilometers (6 miles) away from Puerto Juárez.
The ferry service runs very often, usually twice an hour. It uses fast boats called Ultramar ferries. At the ferry terminal, you'll find two lines for passengers, restrooms, a parking garage, a convenience store, and a place to buy tickets.
In the 1950s, there was an idea to start a ferry service from Puerto Juárez to Pinar del Río Province in Cuba. This was planned to be part of the Pan-American Highway. The trip would have been similar in length to the ferry from Havana to Key West. However, the Cuban Revolution in 1959 stopped this project from happening.
