The story of Punjana tea starts in the late 1800s. A man named Robert S. Thompson learned how to taste tea. This skill is called tea tasting. He joined the tea business in 1887.
In 1896, Robert Thompson became a partner in a company. This company was called McArthur and Willis. He led the company for 51 years. Later, his family members, James and Tony Thompson, also joined as partners. This made the company even more connected to the Thompson family.
The Birth of Punjana
The Punjana brand of tea was created in the early 1950s. This happened when the second generation of the Thompson family joined the business. James Thompson and his wife, Lillias, thought up the name.
They got the idea from a statue in Comber. The word "Punjab" was carved into this famous statue. It was the statue of Robert Rollo Gillespie. This word inspired them to name their new tea "Punjana."
