Punta Abreojos is a small fishing town. It is located in the Mulegé area of Baja California Sur, Mexico. This town sits near the entrance of Laguna La Bocana. A tall hill, about 95 meters high, stands behind the town. Sailors use this hill as a helpful landmark. There are also several lighthouses nearby.

What's in a Name?

The name Punta Abreojos has an interesting story. Abreojos means "open your eyes" in Spanish. This name likely warns sailors about the many hidden rocks and reefs. These underwater dangers make sailing tricky.

Some people think explorer Francisco de Bolaños named the area. His expedition reached this point but went no further. Older maps from the 1600s show rocks offshore called "The Briars" or "Los Abrojos." These words mean thorns or submerged rocks. This suggests the name "Abreojos" comes from these older warnings about the dangerous waters.

Life in Punta Abreojos

The town has about 500 houses. You can find grocery stores and a few hardware stores. There's also a church, schools, and a medical clinic. The town even has an unofficial airstrip.

The main way people earn a living here is through fishing. Fishermen catch valuable seafood like California spiny lobster and abalone. These catches are very important for the town's economy.
