The Putnam Town Hall is a special building in Putnam, Connecticut. It used to be the Putnam High School! This old building is located at 126 Church Street. It was built way back in 1874.

It's one of the oldest high school buildings still standing in Connecticut. The building also shows off a cool style of building design called Gothic Revival architecture. Because it's so important, it was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1993. This list helps protect important places in the United States.

What Does Putnam Town Hall Look Like?

The Putnam Town Hall is across the Quinebaug River from the main part of Putnam. It's a big building made of brick. It has two and a half stories and a sloped roof.

Special Features of the Building

The building has two tall towers that stand out. One tower has two stories and is on the front left side. The other tower is three stories tall and is on the front right. This taller tower has a fancy top with gables, like small pointed roofs. It looks like it should have a clock, but it doesn't!

Most windows on the first floor have a rounded top. The windows on the second floor are mostly curved. The towers have windows in pairs. You can also see cool patterns made from bricks of different colors.

Inside the Building

The inside of the building has changed a lot. This happened when it became offices for the town. But some of the original decorations and the basic layout are still there.

A Look Back: History of the Building

The town of Putnam decided to build a high school in 1873. The building was finished the next year, in 1874. The very first class graduated from this high school in 1876.

From School to Town Hall

This building was used as Putnam's high school until 1911. It became too crowded, so the school moved to a new place. That new building isn't there anymore. The current Putnam High School opened in 1955. It is located on Woodstock Avenue.

Today, this historic building is used for town offices. It's still one of the oldest high school buildings left in Connecticut. It's also a great example of a building style called Ruskinian Gothic architecture.
