Pyl Brook in Morden

Pyl Brook is a small stream located in southwest London, England. It's like a smaller river that flows into a bigger one. Pyl Brook is a "tributary" of Beverley Brook. A tributary is a stream or river that flows into a larger stream or river. Beverley Brook then flows into the famous River Thames.

Pyl Brook actually starts in two different places! The main part of the brook is about 5.3 kilometers (about 3.3 miles) long. It begins in an area called Sutton Common in Sutton. From there, it flows through the London Borough of Merton. Finally, it joins Beverley Brook in a place called Beverley Park in New Malden.

The other part is called East Pyl Brook. It's a bit shorter, about 3.9 kilometers (about 2.4 miles) long. East Pyl Brook also starts in Sutton and flows through Merton. It meets the main Pyl Brook near Grand Drive in Raynes Park.

Special Nature Spots Along Pyl Brook

Some parts of Pyl Brook are very special for nature. Two sections of the East Pyl Brook are protected as "Local Nature Reserves." This means they are important places for wildlife and plants.

Pyl Brook Local Nature Reserve

One of these special areas is called Pyl Brook Local Nature Reserve. It's about 1.3 hectares (about 3.2 acres) in size. This area is located between the brook itself and the back gardens of houses in Rutland Drive, Morden. It's also known as a "Site of Borough Importance for Nature Conservation, Grade II." This means it's a really important place for nature in the local area.

In the past, the London Wildlife Trust helped look after this site. This trust works to protect wildlife in London. The reserve has many different plants. You can find mature hawthorn and elm trees here. There are also areas with crack-willow, elder, blackthorn, and bramble bushes.

It's important to know that this part of the reserve is not open to the public. There's a gate on a path that crosses the site, but it is kept locked.

Morden Park's Connection to the Brook

The Pyl Brook also flows through another important nature spot. This is the Morden Park Local Nature Reserve. This park is another place where the brook helps support local wildlife and plants.
