Pyrmont's Past: A Look at Its History
Pyrmont probably got its name from a place in Germany called Waldeck and Pyrmont. It's interesting how names can travel across the world!
Early Mills and the Post Office
In 1833, a man named John Wagner built a saw mill and a grist mill about a mile south of where Pyrmont is now. A grist mill is a place where grain is ground into flour. Over the years, the mill had several owners, including John Fisher and John Fetterhoff. John Fetterhoff built a much larger mill out of wood.
This mill was very important to the community. Many people worked there, including Joel Wagoner and Bert Smoker. Sadly, the large wooden mill burned down on December 7, 1929.
The area also had a post office. It was first set up in 1851 and called Fetterhoff's Mill Post Office. In 1866, its name was changed to Pyrmont.
The Pyrmont Covered Bridge
Pyrmont was once home to a special type of bridge called a covered bridge. This bridge was built in 1860 by the Wheelock Bridge Company. It was a single-span bridge, meaning it crossed the entire distance without any support in the middle.
The bridge was 152 feet long and used a design called a Smith truss. Covered bridges were often built to protect the wooden parts of the bridge from weather, making them last longer. Unfortunately, this historic bridge collapsed in July 1951.
Remembering Pyrmont's History
To help people remember Pyrmont's past, the Carroll County Historical Society put up a special sign, called an historical marker, in 1977. This marker is located at the main intersection in Pyrmont and shares some of the community's history.
