Pyropia tenera is a type of red seaweed. It is also known as gim or nori. This seaweed is part of the Pyropia family. Its scientific name, tenera, means "delicate." This name fits because the seaweed is quite small. It usually grows to be about 20 to 50 centimeters long. You can mostly find Pyropia tenera in the western Pacific Ocean and the Indian Ocean.

Growing Seaweed for Food

Pyropia tenera is a very important food. People have been growing it for a long time. This is called mariculture, which means farming in the sea. In Japan, this seaweed is a main part of nori. Nori is often used to make sushi. In China, it is called zicai. In Korea, it is known as gim.

Seaweed in Different Countries

Both Pyropia tenera and a similar type, P. yezoensis, are used in dried seaweed foods. In Wales and parts of England, this seaweed is used to make a traditional food called laverbread. So, this delicate red seaweed is enjoyed in many different ways around the world!
