Pōmare V (born November 3, 1839 – died June 12, 1891) was the last monarch (ruler) of Tahiti. He was king from 1877 until 1880, when he had to give up his throne. He was the son of Queen Pōmare IV.

Biography of Pōmare V

Early Life and Becoming King

Pōmare V was born with the name Teri'i Tari'a Te-rā-tane. He became the Crown Prince (the next in line to be king) on May 13, 1855. This happened after his older brother passed away.

He became the king of Tahiti on September 17, 1877. This was after his mother, Queen Pōmare IV, died. His official crowning ceremony took place on September 24, 1877, in Pape'ete, the capital city.

Family Life

Pōmare V was married two times. His first marriage was on November 11, 1857, to Te-mā-ri'i-Ma'i-hara Te-uhe-a-Te-uru-ra'i. She was a princess from the island of Huahine. They later divorced on August 5, 1861.

His second marriage was to Joanna Marau-Ta'aroa Te-pa'u Salmon. They were married in Pape'ete on January 28, 1875. She became known as Queen Marau of Tahiti. They also divorced later, on July 27, 1887.

Pōmare V had three children: one son and two daughters.

Tahiti Becomes French

On June 29, 1880, King Pōmare V made a very important decision. He officially gave Tahiti and its nearby islands to France. This meant that Tahiti was no longer an independent kingdom.

After this, the French government gave him a regular payment, like a pension. He also received special titles from France. These included Officer of the Orders of the Legion of Honour and Agricultural Merit.

Later Life and Death

Pōmare V passed away on June 12, 1891. He died at the Royal Palace in Pape'ete. He was buried in the Tomb of the King, located in Utu'ai'ai in 'Arue.
