Qir (pronounced "Geer") is a city located in the Fars province of Iran. It is an important place because it serves as the main city for both the Qir and Karzin County and its Central District. The city sits quite high up, about 771 meters (2,530 feet) above sea level.
History
On April 10, 1972, Qir faced a very strong earthquake. This natural disaster sadly destroyed the city. About 3,399 people lost their lives, which was two-thirds of everyone living there at that time.

Population
Every few years, Iran counts how many people live in its cities. This is called a census.
- In 2006, the census showed that 16,839 people lived in Qir. They lived in 3,722 households.
- The next census in 2011 counted 18,038 people. These people lived in 4,603 households.
- The most recent census in 2016 measured the population of Qir as 20,010 people. They lived in 5,650 households.
