Counties of Iran facts for kids

Kids Encyclopedia Facts

Iran is a big country, and like many countries, it's divided into smaller parts to help with organization. These smaller parts are called provinces. But even provinces are quite large! So, each province is further divided into even smaller areas called shahrestan (Persian: شهرستان shahrestān). In English, we can think of a shahrestan as a 'county'.

Imagine a county as a local area that usually includes a main city or town, some smaller towns or 'bakhsh' (Persian: بخش bakhsh), and many villages around them. Each county usually has several cities within its borders. As of 2005, Iran had 324 counties. This helps make sure that local needs are met and that people across the country have access to important services.

What are Counties For?

Counties are important for local government and administration. They help manage public services for the people living in that area. This includes things like schools, healthcare, roads, and local police. Each county has its own local offices and officials who work to improve life for the residents.

Think of it like this: a province is a large region, and within that region, counties are smaller, more focused areas. This setup helps the government manage the country more effectively, making sure that different communities get the attention and resources they need.

Iran has many provinces, and each province is made up of several counties. For example, Tehran Province is one of Iran's largest and most populated provinces. It includes many counties, such as Tehran County (where the capital city of Tehran is located), Damavand County, and Shahriar County.
