The Quakenbrück Iron Knight: A War Effort Symbol

On May 29, 1916, a special statue was given to the town. It was called a "nail man" and was made from poplar wood. The statue was placed in the town hall's meeting room. It looked like a knight from the 13th or 14th century. The knight wore armor and held a shield and a sword.

This statue became known as the Quakenbrück Iron Knight (Quakenbrücker Eiserne Burgmann). People would pay to hammer nails into the statue. The money collected from this was used to help with the war effort during World War I. Two soldiers built the statue.
