The Quality Cafe was once a famous restaurant and jazz club in Downtown Los Angeles. It was located at 1143 East 12th Street, close to Central Avenue. This place was known for its lively music and delicious food.

A Place for Jazz Music

In 1924, a jazz group called Quality Four was formed to play at the Quality Cafe. This group was started by a saxophonist named Paul Howard. A very talented young musician, Lionel Hampton, who played the vibraphone, was also part of this band.

The Quality Four soon grew bigger. It first became the Quality Quintet, meaning it had five members. Later, it changed its name again to Quality Serenades. The band toured with a singer named Hazel Myers. However, the group broke up later in the same year.

Becoming the Humming Bird Cafe

On June 7, 1924, the Quality Cafe changed its name. It became known as the Humming Bird Cafe. Under this new name, it quickly became one of the most popular nightclubs in the area. People loved to visit for its exciting atmosphere and great music.
