The Quaraí River (also called Cuareim River) is an important waterway in South America. It is known as Rio Quaraí in Portuguese and Río Cuareim in Spanish. This river is a tributary, which means it's a smaller river that flows into a larger one. The Quaraí River flows into the Uruguay River.
Where is the Quaraí River?
The Quaraí River starts in an area of low hills called the Coxilha de Santana (or Cuchilla de Santa Ana). From there, it flows west until it meets the Uruguay River.
This river acts like a natural border. It separates Uruguay on its southern side from the state of Rio Grande do Sul in Brazil on its northern side.
Understanding the Border Dispute
For a long time, there has been a small disagreement about the exact border between Uruguay and Brazil along a part of the Quaraí River. This kind of disagreement is called a border dispute.
Even though there's this unresolved issue, it doesn't cause problems between the two countries. Uruguay and Brazil are very good friends. They have strong diplomatic relations and work closely together on economic matters. The areas that are part of this dispute have mostly been managed by Brazil.
