Quarry Lake is a lake made by people in the Pikesville area of Baltimore County, Maryland. It used to be a place where marble was dug out of the ground. Now, it is one of the deepest lakes in the whole state. The area around the lake is called Quarry Lake at Greenspring. It has homes, apartments, shops, and offices.
Digging Up History: How Quarry Lake Was Made
Quarry Lake is actually a quarry that filled up with water. A quarry is a large pit where stone or other materials are dug out of the earth. This quarry started way back in 1877. It is located near Greenspring Avenue.
The Boyle family probably first ran this quarry. Later, the McMahon family took over. In 1937, a company called Arundel Corporation bought the McMahon Quarry. It then became known as the Greenspring Quarry. Workers dug out crushed stone from a type of rock called gneiss. Other interesting minerals were also found here. The Arundel Corporation is now part of a bigger company called Vulcan Materials Company.
From Quarry to Community: The Development of Quarry Lake
In 1999, a plan was made to build a new community around the lake. This community would have different types of buildings. Construction started in 2005. The first shops and businesses opened in 2006.
Today, you can find medical offices, a Walgreens store, and a grocery store called The Fresh Market there. The community also has 83 single-family homes. Plus, there are 500 condos, which are like apartments you can own.
The lake itself is about 40-acre (160,000 m2) big. It is also very deep, reaching about 500 feet (150 m) down. This makes it one of the deepest lakes in Maryland.
