History of Pikesville

Pikesville, Maryland, is named after an American soldier and explorer named Zebulon Pike (1779–1813). He was famous for exploring parts of the western United States. While many places in other states are named after Pike, Pikesville, Maryland, is unique because it's the only modern place called "Pikesville."

There was another old town named Pikesville in Kentucky, founded in 1818. It was also named after Zebulon Pike. However, to avoid confusion with Pikeville, Kentucky, that town changed its name to "Flippin, Kentucky" in 1858. Today, only a small stream called "Pike[s]ville Branch" remains to remind people of the original Pikesville in Kentucky.
