Owings Mills is a community in Baltimore County, Maryland, United States. It is a suburb of the city of Baltimore. In 2020, about 35,674 people lived here.

Owings Mills is known for being the end of the Baltimore Metro Subway line. It is also home to the Baltimore Ravens football team's main building. The studios for Maryland Public Television are also located here. In 2008, a magazine called Owings Mills one of the "100 Best Places to Live and Launch" a business.

Geography and Nature

Owings Mills is located at 39°24′44″N 76°47′35″W / 39.41222°N 76.79306°W / 39.41222; -76.79306. It covers an area of about 9.6 square miles. Most of this area is land.

Unique Geology

The Soldiers Delight Natural Environment Area is near Owings Mills. This area has a special type of rock called serpentinite. This rock creates a unique ecosystem with thin soil that washes away easily.

In the past, this area and the Bare Hills District were important for mining. They were the biggest producers of a metal called chromium in the world during the 1800s.

People and Population

Owings Mills has grown a lot over the years. In 1960, only about 3,810 people lived here. By 2020, the population had grown to over 35,000 people.

The community is very diverse. Many different groups of people live in Owings Mills.

Shopping and Entertainment

The area used to have the Owings Mills Mall, which was a large enclosed shopping mall. It closed in 2015 and was torn down in 2017. In its place, a new outdoor shopping area called Mill Station was built. The first store to open there was Costco in 2018.

The Metro Centre at Owings Mills is also nearby. It has the Metro subway stop, along with restaurants and shops.

Another large shopping area is Foundry Row. It was built on the site of an old manufacturing complex. A popular grocery store, Wegmans, opened there in 2016.

The Rosewood Center is a historic site in Owings Mills. It used to be a facility for people with mental disabilities. It closed in 2010. Stevenson University bought the property in 2017 and is now turning it into a new part of their campus called Owings Mills East.

Owings Mills has been featured in TV shows and movies.

  • The TV show Wall $treet Week with Louis Rukeyser was made at the Maryland Public Television studios in Owings Mills for many years.
  • The weekly car show MotorWeek has also been produced here since 1981. You can often see local roads in the program.
  • The movie The Institute was filmed at the old Rosewood Center.
