What Does Quarters 1 Look Like?
Quarters 1 is one of several large houses at Fort Myer. These homes are on the west side of Whipple Field. This field used to be a parade ground. The houses are built on a small hill. From here, you can see the Potomac River and Washington, DC.
The house is 2-1/2 stories tall. It is made of red brick. It has a roof that slopes down on the sides. A part of the roof sticks out at the front. There is a porch on the first floor. It goes across the front and extends to the left. This part is called a porte-cochere. It is a covered area where cars can drive through.
The porch has round columns that come in pairs. These columns stand on bases. There is also a railing with decorative spindles. Inside, the house has not changed much since it was built. Outside, a sunporch was added to one side. The house has 21 rooms. It has over 10,000 square feet (about 929 square meters) of living space.
