Quavers are a popular British snack. They are made from potatoes and are deep-fried. Quavers first appeared in the UK in 1968. They were originally made by a company called Smith's. Since 1997, the well-known snack company Walkers has made them. The name "Quavers" comes from a type of musical note.

The Story of Quavers

Quavers were launched in 1968. Their first slogan was "you get a lovely lot of Quavers in a bag." People described them as "curly potato puffs." When they first came out, you could buy them in cheese and smoky bacon flavours. Over the years, many other flavours were tried. These included Spicy Beef, Sweet and Sour, Prawn Cocktail, and Ketchup.

New Flavours and Owners

In 1993, a Salt and Vinegar flavour was added. Around this time, the packaging started to show the Walkers brand name. Walkers, which is owned by PepsiCo, bought the Quavers brand in 1995. This made Quavers part of the Frito Lay International family of snacks.

In 1996, a Tangy Tomato flavour joined the range. By 1997, Quavers were part of Walkers' "Snackshack" collection. The brand was relaunched a couple of times in 1998 and 1999. In 1998, the Prawn Cocktail flavour came back with a new recipe. In 1999, the Cheese flavour was refreshed.

Changes Over the Years

In 2002, a "Streaky Bacon" flavour was introduced. These Quavers had pink and brown pieces, looking like real bacon. For Halloween in 2004 and 2005, special Ghost-shaped Cheese Quavers were released.

In 2007, Walkers changed the packaging for Quavers and other snacks. This new packaging showed that they used healthier sunseed oil. The Quavers logo was also updated a little.

In 2009, Quavers and other snacks changed their packaging again. This was to highlight that they had "99 Calories or Less" per pack. The Cheese flavour even went down to 87 calories per standard pack.

In 2011, Quavers packaging became brighter. The Walkers logo was clearly visible on the packets. For a while, only the Cheese flavour was sold. In 2013, the six-pack sizes were made smaller to use less plastic.

In 2019, the packaging was updated again. This was to show that less plastic was being used in the packets. In 2020, Walkers announced good news for fans. The Prawn Cocktail and Salt and Vinegar flavours would return in 2021!

What Are Quavers Made Of?

Quavers are currently available in Cheese, Prawn Cocktail, and Salt and Vinegar flavours. But they have had many other kinds over the years.

The main ingredient in Quavers is potato starch. They are deep-fried to create a snack with a texture similar to krupuk (prawn crackers). However, Quavers have a different taste. They are also smaller and have a curled-up rectangle shape. This shape looks a bit like a musical quaver.
