Quay is a small community in Oklahoma, USA. It is located right on the border between Pawnee and Payne counties. It's known as an unincorporated community and a census-designated place (CDP). This means it's a recognized area, but it doesn't have its own local government like a city or town.
In the year 2000, Quay had 47 people living there. At that time, it was still a town. However, on August 23, 2000, it stopped being an official town. This is called disincorporating. The 2010 census did not count any people in Quay. But the most recent count in 2020 showed that 39 people live there.

A Look Back: Quay's History
This community was first called Lawson. It was named after Stonewall J. Lawson, who owned the land where the town was built. A post office opened here on January 17, 1894.
The post office's name changed to Quay on February 24, 1903. This new name honored Matthew Quay, who was a Senator from Pennsylvania. At first, Quay was a farming community. Farmers grew crops and raised animals there.
The Oil Boom Years
Something big happened in the early 1920s: oil was found nearby! This discovery made Quay's population grow very fast. It went from about 100 people to around 4,000 people. Imagine how busy that must have been!
But the oil didn't last forever. When oil production slowed down, the town's population dropped. By the 1930 census, only 186 people lived in Quay. The post office closed in 1957, and the local school closed in 1965.
Famous Events in Quay
An interesting historical event happened here in 1896. A famous outlaw named Bill Doolin was killed in Quay. He was stopped by a lawman named Heck Thomas and his team.
