The King's Gallery is a special art gallery in London. It is located at Buckingham Palace, which is the official home of the British monarch. This gallery used to be called the Queen's Gallery.

It first opened to the public in 1962, during the time of Elizabeth II. The gallery shows amazing artworks from the Royal Collection. This is a huge collection of art owned by the Royal Family. The art on display changes often, so there is always something new to see! The gallery was made much bigger in the early 2000s. It has its own entrance and usually shows about 450 works, mostly paintings and drawings.

History of the Gallery Building

The King's Gallery is a part of Buckingham Palace. It stands where the palace chapel used to be. That chapel was damaged during the Second World War.

The gallery was built specifically to show art. It opened in 1962. Over the next 37 years, five million people visited it! In 1999, the gallery closed for a big renovation and expansion. An architect named John Simpson designed the new parts.

On May 21, 2002, Queen Elizabeth II officially reopened the gallery. This happened during her Golden Jubilee celebrations. The new design added a grand entrance with Doric columns. It also included many new rooms, making the space for art three times bigger! The gallery is open to visitors for most of the year.
