Queen Insun (born Sim clan; 27 June 1532 – 12 February 1575) was an important queen in Joseon history. She was the wife of King Myeongjong. She served as the Queen of Joseon from 1545 until her husband passed away in 1567. After that, she was known as Queen Dowager Uiseong. She also acted as a regent for her adopted son, King Seonjo, from 1567 to 1568. A regent is someone who rules a country when the king is too young.
Her Life Story
Early Years
Lady Sim was born on June 27, 1532. Her father was Sim Kang, and her mother was Lady Yi. She was the oldest of ten children. Her family was well-known and connected to the royal family.
Becoming Queen
In April 1542, Lady Sim was chosen to marry Grand Prince Gyeongwon. He was the only son of King Jungjong and Queen Munjeong. When she married him, she received the title of Princess Consort.
In 1545, King Injong passed away. Since King Injong did not have any children, Lady Sim's husband became the next king, King Myeongjong. This made Lady Sim the new Queen of Joseon. In 1551, she gave birth to their son, Crown Prince Sunhoe.
A New King
Sadly, Crown Prince Sunhoe died in 1563. This meant there was no direct heir for King Myeongjong. When King Myeongjong also passed away in 1567, a new king had to be chosen. Prince Haseong, who later became King Seonjo, was chosen as the next ruler. He was King Myeongjong's nephew and adopted son.
Ruling as Regent
Because King Seonjo was very young when he became king, Queen Insun became the Queen Regent in 1567. This meant she ruled the country for him until he was old enough. She stepped down as regent in 1568. After that, she was known as the Queen Dowager. She was given the special title of Uiseong in 1569.
Queen Insun lived as Queen Dowager for eight years. She passed away on February 12, 1575, at Changgyeong Palace. She was buried with her husband in Kangreung.
Family Connections
Queen Insun's family had many ties to other important people in Joseon history. For example, she was related to Queen Soheon, who was the wife of King Sejong.
