In the world of Oz, Queen Lurline is first mentioned in the book The Tin Woodman of Oz. She is the powerful Queen of all Fairies. She is also known for creating them!
Lurline is famous for using her magic to enchant the Land of Oz many years ago. Before her magic, Oz was just a normal country. It was surrounded by four deserts that no one could cross. After she used her magic, Oz became a special fairy land.
After enchanting the country, Queen Lurline chose Princess Ozma to rule Oz. Ozma ruled alongside King Pastoria.
Why She's Important

Her Appearance in Wicked
Queen Lurline also shows up in the book Wicked. This book was written by Gregory Maguire in 1995. In this story, she is sometimes called "Lurlina."
Maguire's version of Lurline is seen as a main figure in an old nature-based religion in Oz. Even though belief in the fairy queen Lurline is not as popular anymore, Oz still celebrates a winter holiday for her. This holiday is called Lurlinemas.
Sometimes, people who follow Lurline's beliefs are treated badly. This happens because of people who follow another main religion in Oz called Unionism. Unionism worships "The Unnamed God."
