Gregory Maguire (born June 9, 1954) is an American novelist. He writes many books for both adults and children. Some of his well-known novels include Wicked and Confessions of an Ugly Stepsister. Many of his adult books are inspired by classic children's stories.
Maguire published his first novel, The Lightning Time, in 1978. His book Wicked, published in 1995, was his first novel for adults. Wicked became a very popular Broadway musical in 2003. It was later made into a two-part movie. The first movie came out in 2024, and the second part is planned for 2025.
Maguire is married to American painter Andy Newman. They have three children.
About Gregory Maguire
Gregory Maguire was born in Albany, New York. He is the youngest of four children. His mother died shortly after he was born. Because of this, he lived with an aunt for a short time. When he was six months old, he went to a local orphanage. He returned home at age two after his father remarried. Maguire has three half-siblings from his father's second marriage.
He went to Catholic schools for his early education. He earned a BA degree in English from the State University of New York at Albany in 1976. He then received a MA degree in children's literature from Simmons College in 1978. Later, he earned a PhD in English and American literature from Tufts University in 1990.
In 1978, when he was 24, Maguire published his first novel, The Lightning Time. From 1979 to 1986, he worked as a professor and co-director at the Simmons College Center for the Study of Children's Literature. In 1987, Maguire helped start a charity called Children's Literature New England, Inc. He was a co-director for 25 years. He has lived in different places, including Dublin, London, and near Boston.
In 1995, Maguire published his first adult novel, Wicked: the Life and Times of the Wicked Witch of the West. This book became very popular through word of mouth. It sold 500,000 copies by the time the Broadway musical opened in 2003. Ten years after it was published, Wicked was on the New York Times bestseller list for 26 weeks.
Family Life
Maguire met American painter Andy Newman in 1997. They adopted three children: Luke and Alex, who are from Cambodia, and Helen, who is from Guatemala. Maguire and Newman were married in June 2004. They have lived in Concord, Massachusetts since 1999.
Maguire is a practicing Catholic.
