The Story of Quely Biscuits

How Quely Started

The idea for Quely biscuits began a long time ago, even before the company was officially founded. In the 1700s, sailors needed food that would last a very long time on their journeys. Biscuits were perfect for this! In the 1800s, a special oven in a place called Can Guixe in Inca made these long-lasting biscuits. You can still see parts of that old oven today!

Building the First Factory

In 1934, a man named Jaime Doménech Borrás bought land to build the first Quely factory. But building it was not easy. The Spanish Civil War started in 1936, which delayed everything. It wasn't until 1940 that he could finally order all the machines needed. Then, World War II caused even more problems. The special stone oven for baking was built during the war.

A Family Business Grows

Jaime Doménech passed away in 1947. His sons, Jaime and Gabriel, bravely continued his work. The factory finally started making biscuits in the 1950s. They wanted to call their biscuits "Cor de Mallorca," which means "Heart of Majorca." But they couldn't use that name because of legal reasons. So, they chose "Quely" instead!

By the 1960s, Quely biscuits were very popular in Majorca. In 1970, the company became a public limited company called Quely, S.A. This meant it could grow even more.

Modern Times and Challenges

Quely has always worked to become more modern. In 1993, a big fire sadly destroyed the entire factory, including the machines and buildings. But the company didn't give up! They rebuilt everything. Today, Quely is still a company from Majorca, and the family continues to run it.
